The helicopters ready to start again

from 2010-01-27 17:06:32

The board of the Polish Medical Air Rescue decided to start operations of helicopters again on 27 th of January 2010 after detailed analysis of the results of tests on fuel and consultations with the experts. However, before the base goes operative, the check-up of fuel both in helicopters and tanks has to be carried out.

Help for a patient with severe burns

from 2010-01-20 17:21:45

The Polish Medical Air Rescue helped a patient who suffered from severe burns in a fire which had burst out in his flat. Two helicopters and a plane transported him from Elblag to Gryfice.

The fire burst out in the morning on the 20th of January. A 60-years-old man in a severe condition was hospitalized in Elblag. He suffered from burns of 3rd and 4th grade. A doctor from the hospital called the Polish Medical Air Rescue to transport the patient to a specialized centre in Gryfice. The Gryfice centre is the only place in northern Poland to treat severe burns.

Helicopter Emergency Medical Service team from Gdańsk transported the patient from Elbląg to Gdańsk airport, where Piaggio Avanti medical plane had already waited. It took the patient to an airport in Szczecin-Goleniów. There the patient was taken to Gryfice on board of a helicopter from Szczecin.

Fast transport of the patients with severe burns to specialized hospitals makes it possible to start proper treatment as soon as possible. Therefore, to ensure the best care for such patients, the Polish Medical Air Rescue signed an agreement with the Polish Society of Treating Burns five years ago. According to it, such patients are transported along with high standards of care established on Evidence Based Medicine. The doctors and paramedics from the Polish Medical Air Rescue may consult the specialists in the field of treating burns when it is necessary. Additionally, hospitals specializing in treating burns inform medical dispatcher of the Polish Medical Air Rescue about availability of beds in their wards. This shortens the decision process when the need to transport a severely burnt patient occurs.

EC 135 started operations in Western Pomerania

from 2009-12-22 15:42:25

Western Pomerania received a new EC 135 helicopter for Christmas. One of the most modern rescue rotocopters in Europe started flying to the injured in road accidents and severely sick patients in this region of Poland on 22nd of December 2009. This year near 690 rescue flights were conducted from this base on an old Mi-2 Plus helicopter.

The Western Pomerania regional base of the Polish Medical Air Rescue started operations on the EC 135 helicopter as the second one in Poland. The new rotocopter was presented officially in the base near Szczecin in the presence of deputy health minister Marek Haber, deputy head of the Western Pomeranian Region Andrzej Chmielewski and head of the Polish Medical Air Rescue Robert Galazkowski.

The Szczecin rotocopter is one of the 23 helicopters purchased by the minister of health for the Polish Medical Air Rescue. All the 23 machines are to be delivered to Poland to the end of next year. Six helicopters have been delivered until now, the remaining 17 will be in Poland in 2010. The new fleet is to be operating for at least 20 years.

The pilots from the regional base in Western Pomerania received their EC 135 type-rating licence in Germany on the grounds of the contract between Eurocopter and the Polish minister of health. Then they were provided additional training designed by the Polish Medical Air Rescue which took place in Poland. The training included more then 30 hours of flight during the day and night. The members of the HEMS crew participated in the tasks of the training.

- We want to make sure that the future operations are safe – Robert Galazkowski explained the reason for additional training.

The new helicopter is faster. Thanks to the EC 135 the operational range of the regional base near Szczecin is larger. The history of the medical aviation in Western Pomerania dates back to 1956. The crews from this base did not carry out medical missions alone, but they also helped to save the shipwrecked persons.

Poland has the sixth EC 135 helicopter

from 2009-12-17 15:33:59

The sixth out of the ordered 23 EC 135 helicopters landed in Warsaw in the afternoon on 16th of December 2009. This means that the schedule of the delivery of the new helicopters for 2009 has been kept.

According to the contract between Eurocopter and the Polish minister of health, the next 17 EC 135 rotocopters for the Polish Medical Air Rescue are scheduled to be delivered between April and December next year.

The program of the fleet replacement at the Polish Medical Air Rescue is a venture with no precedence in the history of the Polish medical aviation. It has to be remembered that the delivery of the new machines does not automatically mean starting them into the operations. The new helicopter can go operative in a regional base under the condition that the pilots, members of HEMS crews and mechanics of this base concluded the two stage training on the EC 135 helicopter.

The pilots started their training for the EC 135 type-rating in the first half of his year in Germany. According to the contract between the minister of health and Eurocopter, 50 Polish pilots in total are to do the training for the EC 135 type-rating in Germany. The remaining pilots from our company will be trained for the EC 135 type-rating in Poland at the Centre for Pilots’ Training at the Polish Medical Air Rescue headquarters.

The Polish Medical Air Rescue has also provided its own additional training for the pilots and HEMS crew members in order to minimize the risk of the future operations on the new helicopters. It includes more then 30 hours in the air on the EC 135 both in the day and night. It is after concluding this training by the HEMS crew and the mechanics that the regional base of the Polish Medical Air Rescue may start operations on the new helicopter.

Krakow regional base has started missions on the new rotocopter on the 7th of December. The Szczecin base will go operative on the EC 135 just before Christmas. The next two bases – in Warsaw and Gdansk - are scheduled to start operations on the EC 135 helicopters in the beginning of 2010.

Peace to their memory!

from 2009-12-16 15:28:55

President Lech Kaczynski conferred the Knight’s Crosses of the Rebirth of Poland upon the pilot of the Polish Medical Air Rescue Janusz Cyganski and paramedic Czesław Buśko. Emilia Cyganska and Marta Busko were given the distinctions on 16 th of December 2009.

Janusz Cygański i Czesław Buśko died on 17th of February 2009 in a helicopter crash during the mission to the victims of the collision of several cars near Legnica. Janusz Cyganski was 47. Before the work for the Polish Medical Air Rescue he flied on Mi-2 helicopters carrying out crop dusting and extinguishing fires. Czeslaw Busko was 50. Apart from the Polish Medical Air Rescue he worked also in ambulance in emergency. Janusz Cyganski had a wife and two sons; Czeslaw Busko a wife and daughter.

Order of the Rebirth of Poland (“Polonia Restituta”) is a civilian distinction, established in 1921 to recognize men for their extraordinary services for the state and people.

EC 135 is operating in Krakow

from 2009-12-08 10:19:15

EC 135 performed its first mission in Poland on 7th of December 2009. The HEMS crew from Krakow was called by the emergency station in Kazimierza to a road accident.

The helicopter was called for its first mission no longer then an hour after the ceremony of starting the new helicopter into operations.

- To get this helicopter into operations required many years of hard work. Now we can check results – the deputy minister of health Marek Haber said.

He reminded that the cabinets and parliaments of the three succeeding terms of office have consequently carried out the program of the exchange of the fleet for the Polish Medical Air Rescue. The bill on the program was passed in 2005. It allowed to buy 23 EC 135 helicopters and a flight simulation device.

- We are opening a new chapter in the history of the Polish medical aviation – the head of the Polish Medical Air Rescue Robert Galazkowski said.

He praised the deputy head of the company dr Zbigniew Zyla, who had graduated from Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and started work as a board doctor in Krakow HEMS crew. Dr Zyla is the head of the project team for the medical cabin in the new helicopter. It is thanks to the work of this team that the Polish Medical Air Rescue can boast of the most modern helicopter medical cabin in Europe.

The accident of the helicopter

from 2009-11-20 19:07:36

Agusta 109 Power got its tail boom and main rotor blades torn off in the consequence of an accident which happened on 20th of November at Warsaw-Babice airport. There were two experienced pilots on board – one of them luckily did not have any serious injures, the other was transported to hospital for a spine operation.

It was a PC examination flight. The accident happened after the helicopter had landed on the ground and the pilots managed to perform two activities due to the procedures after landing. It was then that the strong vibrations occurred. This led to tearing off the tail boom and cutting off the main rotor blades.

- It might have been a ground resonance – the head of the Polish Medical Air Rescue Robert Galazkowski said. – But it is the National Committee on Flight Accidents that is to find out the reasons of the accident.

He stressed that the helicopter was properly serviced. This was the only Agusta rotocopter in the fleet of the Polish Medical Air Rescue, yet there were five mechanics dedicated to the service of it.

- Three of them have the licence of highest categories: B and C. All of them are our employees – Galazkowski underlined. He added that before the start of the helicopter neither the mechanics nor the pilots had observed any alarming symptoms in functioning of the machine.

He added that the rotocopter underwent a through check-up in Belgium in spring this year. It had been operated by the Polish Medical Air Rescue for four years and flew 2614 hours. The machine is insured.

The Warsaw base remains now without a helicopter. The board of the Polish Medical Air Rescue will undertake all the possible means to start the operations from this base as soon as possible. In the meantime the Warsaw area is covered by the helicopters from Plock, Lublin, Kielce and Lodz.
